The place was nice, Zack didn't mind living in a smaller place. True, the temple he grew up in was pretty big, but it was more crowded. He'd unpacked the majority of his things, and had a job now. The hours weren't great, he had pretty close to high school type hours. He had begun to heal already, thankfully. The unpacking had been slowed thanks to the mugging just after arriving, but with some stitches it had been better. The deep gashes were still a little sensitive, but not so much, and he was a quick healer. Already he'd realized that his neighbors weren't fond of him. The older male of the house gave him the most disdainful looks, and the woman simply wrinkled her nose and gave him a scoff, but she didn't have to say it out loud. He knew. It was ok.
He often heard them shouting at one another, or at their daughter. He'd yet to meet any of them formally, but he could tell by the way they looked that they were higher class than he. Their house was bigger, their clothes much nicer, their cars looked straight from the maker nice. His was a little on the worn side, but it had a good stereo and it worked ok, so he was happy with it. He only knew the girls name, Autumn Marie; they yelled at her quite often. He didn't quite get why, she always seemed to be doing something wrong, but he never witnessed it. She spent a lot of her time in their backyard, by herself. Probably just trying to get away or keep herself from tears. The rest of the time she seemed to spend alone in her room, the window to her room and the attic where he did the majority of his artwork were side by side. He didn't peep or anything, but he'd seen her on occasion when the curtains were open and she passed by the window, he heard the music she played through the open glass, and he'd sometimes seen her dance when she thought he couldn't see her. But he usually gave her the privacy she thought she had.
He had given her a few cheerful smiles, hoping to brighten her day when she was in those depressed moods, he knew how a simple smile could be infectious. She appeared rather shy though. This morning, he could hear them quite clearly. He'd stumbled to get the paper as they'd left for work and school and such, but he'd heard very clear Autumn's pretty voice swear loudly. Her mother and father both rounded on her and she insisted it was because they'd made her change clothes twice that morning, and she'd missed her bus. Had it been a different family, maybe one who had a sense of humor, Zack would have laughed. But her parents were pretty harsh, they appeared to have an image of who and what their child should be already built up, and Autumn didn't seem to fit.
He'd never understand that, for one, he didn't actually have parents. for two, his adoptive father had been all about freedom, self expression, and being true to yourself. He never realized growing up that not all families were like that. He snapped from his reverie as her father raised a hand, but he put it down quickly. Zack had never seen anyone get hit in their house, but then again, he wasn't looking either. The father exclaimed that if she'd dress properly in the first place, she wouldn't have had to change. So it was all her fault, and they wouldn't be held responsible. She'd take her tardy in school, and she'd walk. The mother said nothing, but seemed to agree as she got in her own car and the pair pulled out side by side, and went opposite directions.
Zack glanced at his watch and checked to make sure the parents were gone before heading down the driveway where Autumn stood, shaking either with anger or with tears. She stooped to grab her bag angrily and almost hit him with it as she swung the bag onto her back. He ducked. "Whoa, hey now." He smiled a little and stood straight again, running his hands through his hair as if to cover ducking the fury of an angry teenager. "I'll give you a ride," He offered with a shrug, though part of him doubted she'd take it. But she just didn't seem like the rest of her family, she was more sad, and she wasn't always angry.

Autumn was near tears as her parents screamed at her. Just because she refused to wear the prim and proper clothes her sister seemed to adore didn't make her a bad kid, did it? Her mother and father screamed, begging her to change, to become someone who she wasnt. At least, thats what autumn got from it. She blinked back tears as the fought, dropping her bag on the ground. See ya later, she thought. There was no way she was sticking around here. When her parents returned home, Autumn would be gone. At least, that was her plan.
She rubbed her arm absently as she stood there taking the screams. She couldn't life here any longer. As the drove away she knelt down to retrieve her bag, she didn't really pay attention as she swung it up over her shoulder. to her surprise, someone was there. "Oh!" she gasped, eyes widening slightly. "Im sorry" she exclaimed, a soft blush spreading across her tear stained cheeks. "Fuck." she mumbled, quickly turning and wiping her eyes, she wasn't supposed ot cry in front of anyone. That was her own rule, "Erm, I'm Autumn" she stated shyly, extending her hand towards the stranger once she was positive the trace of tears had been wiped away from her face.

Zack smiled a little as Autumn became embarrassed and introduced herself. He already knew who she was, he heard her parents say her name angrily so often he didn't need to ask it. "I know," He realized at once that could sound very creepy, so he added to it. "I've heard your parents say your name. A lot." He gave her a sympathetic smile and looked at his watch. High schools would start in about half an hour or so. "I'm Zack. I just moved in next door. If you need a ride to school or like a place to cool off, my doors open..." He trailed off for a second, his green eyes glancing up and down the road for a second.
He realized that he doubted, with her parents being the way they were, that she'd even be allowed at his place, even if he explained to them he was only being friendly. And he also sort of doubted she'd want to in the first place. He was sort of ragged, his hair was a little messy and his pants were baggy and torn, his shoes were scuffed and looked like hand-me-downs. He was, all in all, a picture perfect poor guy. She was... Picture perfect. "I mean, if you think your parents would let you."

Autumn couldn't help but giggle softly, "My parents?" She bit her lip and sort of studied him quickly. He wasn't the type of guy her parents would want her so much as talking to, but he was exactly the type of boy she enjoyed spending time with. "Maybe i could hang with you for a bit." She paused chewing on her lip. "On second thought, maybe you could drive me to a motel or something." she shrugged lightly, brushing her blond curls from her face. "I know how that sounds..but im just...trying to get away from them." she explained frantically, her eyes sort of wandering to his. "Please?"
She knew it was pathetic, btu she refused to shed a tear while he was there. She didn't want to seem as pitiful as her parents made her feel. She swallowed softly, a slight effortless laugh escaped. "They do that alot, bet you dont even know my sisters name." she snickered, Zack. So that was his name. She smiled slightly and nodded. "Nice to meet you Zack."

Zack's eyebrows shot up quickly as Autumn asked him to take her to, of all places, a motel. She was joking right? He relaxed a little when she claimed it was purely to get away from her parents. He didn't really have parents, but he knew not all of them were so insane. Her's yelled a lot more than any he'd met before. "I could, I guess." He replied uncertainly. Wasn't helping a teenager leave home illegal? Then again, did that bother him? Not really. Seeing her frantic face he calmed down. "Yeah, sure. you want to go now or do you want to get anything or...?" He trailed off with an expectant look.
He actually hadn't even known autumn had a sister. Proved how much her parents yelled at her, unless her name was Marie? He shook his head a little. "I actually didn't even know you had a sister," He admitted with a guilty shrug of his shoulders.

Autty smiled lightly, shrugging her tiny shoulders as she did. "Azlyn rarely gets yelled at. Its always 'Autumn Marie!'" she sighed, running her fingers absently through her hair, "she's my twin" she stated sadly. Looking over at his house she bit her lip, "Hey, can i just hang at your place for a bit?" she asked quietly, almost shyly. Autumn and azlyn were opposites, and that had always been evident. She blinked up at the boy named zack and shrugged. "I guess I'm not ready for them to /totaly/ hate me just yet" not to mention if her parents caught her at the tiny house next door they'd beat her.
She let her eyes sort of float to one of his tattoo's. "Where'd you get all those?" she asked curiously, her hand sort of fluttering up to her side, as though she wanted to touch it, then dropping back down. She loved art, though she didn't have the ability to make it herself. Not that type. She could sing and play but she couldn't for the life of her draw.

Zack's mind was further put at ease when Autumn retracted her motel request. That made him worry a lot less, her wanting to not run away anymore. "Sure, I don't work today. I usually work from about eleven to four, so you're welcome to hang out any other time. I'm a pretty good listener if you need to vent." He smiled at her and started walking back to the house, pausing as she spoke again. His eyes drifted toward her focus, she was looking at his ink. "Oh." He smiled a little and moved his arm so she could see it better if she liked. "I'm an artist, I work in a tattoo shop most days."
He was actually pretty proud of his work, and of his job, and especially of getting a job so quickly after moving here, it was like a miracle. He'd been so worried about not being able to find work, but luckily he made enough now he'd been able to refuse Monkey's help with the bills, he was so glad he could do it himself. Not that he didn't appreciate the offer, he felt bad for his adoptive father trying to help him financially all the time. He wanted to be the one who helped.

Her blue eyes sort of widdened at that statement, "Really?!" she exclaimed softly, her tiny hand touching the art gingerly, afraid that if she blinked it would vanish. She'd never really seen tattoo's up close, despite her having wanted one for ages. She just sort of assumed they where painful and out of her small budget. "They're beautiful!" she stated, biting her lip. "Maybe someday i could get one." she added quietly, tilting her head to the side as she did. She couldn't take ehr eyes off the elaborate art, but she did however remove her fingers.
She nodded, clearing her throat. "I dont...do the whole venting/crying in public thing. I take it out in my room with my guitar." she shrugged slightly, smiling to herself. Her music was ... well exactly that. Something she did in the solace of her own room, in the silence of night. When her parents couldn't comment on her unbelievable lyrics and her sister couldn't prove to be better then her at yet another task. It was her escape.

Zack could tell Autumn was a lover of art, just by the way she reacted when he told her he was an artist. Her eyes lit up and she became much happier. He liked it. "Yeah? You'd look good with one or two." He wasn't lying, it would have to be something nice, brightly colored or simple. Sleeves on her would look terrible, but something cute and little would look nice. He opened the door for her and smiled as she stated she was a musician of sorts. But he knew that.
"I know, I've heard you. the windows to my art room and your bedroom are right across, I hear you play sometimes." He never really eaves dropped, but he'd opened the window before just to hear her playing, it was pretty nice. "You have a great voice, and you're good with the acoustic."

Autumn sort of blushed at this statement, a slight smile playing on her lips. "Oh?" she asked quietly, thinking momentarily. "Know anyone who'd give me one?" she asked, almost playfully. She was comfortable with this boy, that was for certain. She followed him into the home, sort of in awe at how simple it was. She loved in, in fact she honestly wished she could live here forever. It wasn't as extravagant as her home, but it was personalized and well...beautiful in its own rights.
Autumns blue eyes sort of widened, oh...he'd heard her playing. Great. She bit her lip slightly and shrugged, "I'm alright, I suppose" she said shyly, fidgeting some. She wasn't sure anyone else had ever heard her music, it was hers. She looked around at the house again, her eyes sort of wide, "Its beautiful" she stated boldly, brushing her wild curls from her face.

Zack smiled a little and shrugged his shoulders playfully at Autumn when she asked if he knew anyone who'd want to give her a tattoo. He didn't think she was eighteen yet, but he couldn't be sure. He closed the door behind them. "I might, how old are you?" He asked curiously. It didn't really matter, he had his first tattoo at like fourteen, but her parents might slaughter him if they ever found out he gave her one. He couldn't imagine them being okay with body art. "I don't really care, but I mean, if you're under eighteen make sure you'd hide it from the parentals." He pressed a finger to his lips a little to show her it was all in good humor, he wasn't really a serious type.
"You can drop that anywhere, it's kind of a mess." He smiled guiltily, but at least all the unpacking was done. It just so happened he didn't have much to unpack. "Aw, you don't have to lie to me. I know it's not as nice as your place but it's the best I can do for now." He glanced around the place, he didn't see beauty really. It was really a downgrade from what she was used to. The walls were sort of peeling a little and the ceiling had a crack in the paint, as did the window and the window in the back door. But they had a bit of duct tape to keep them up, it was all good. He noticed Autumn was too modest, about her talents at least. Probably because of how often she was told she wasn't good enough, which was pretty often.

Autumn shrugged her petite shoulders lightly, "No i mean, Its beautiful because its not...its not perfect." she blushed lightly and shrugged, setting her bag down on the floor against a wall and moving further into the place. "I mean, perfection's over rated, why try and make it something that's not who you are?" she giggled softly, biting down on her lower lip. "I'm sixteen" she admitted, "Nearly seventeen though!" she was stubborn, that had always been her most prominent--and hated--personality trait.
Her parents notice something on her body? Unlikely. They could pick out small physical flaws easily, but she'd had her stomach pierced for a few years and they'd yet to notice that. She ran her figners though her curls, turning to look at him, "I dont really care if they see it." She admitted, shrugging again, "I mean, worst they could do..." she sort of trailed off, frowning some. Right. worst they could do was beat the living shit out of their imperfect daughter. "Well, they can fuck themselves" she said finally.

Zack took the hint as Autumn spoke, passing the cracked window as he made his way to the kitchen. She didn't really like perfect. She wasn't perfect. "Well perfection is flawed, isn't it our flaws that define us anyway?" Talk about being straight out of a fortune cookie, Zack laughed at himself softly and shook his head at Autumn as he pulled out a couple glasses. "I could give you one if you ever decide what you want. Want a drink?" Granted he doubted she'd want the same thing he did, Zack was very much a casual drinker. He didn't usually get drunk, but he drank weak drinks often.
Zack gave a laugh as he made a mixture of iced tea and whiskey, but fairly diluted. "We ll I don't want your parents to murder me. I think they already might if they see you around here." He wasn't too concerned with her parents killing him, but he didn't really WANT to get the 'stay away from our daughter, freak' talk. "Don't say that, the worst they could do is like, cut it off and keep you locked in the tower." He smiled a little, he'd always thought of the top of a house like a tower, like from one of the fairy tales he never really read.

She raised her eyebrow some, "Did you just compare me to rapunzle?" she asked giggling. She'd never really thought about her life like that, fairy tales just didn't come true in her mind. She thought for a minute and shrugged, "I sort of already know." she admitted blushing. She loved art, she just couldn't make it for the life of her. She followed him into the kitchen, nodding in agreement with his statement, "Perfections definitley flawed" she agreed, chewing on her lip.
"Sure." She knew he was mixing something, and she knew she should probably have been concerned, btu she wasn't scared of this boy. She actually felt unnaturally comfortable in his presence. He wasn't judging her, he wasn't yelling, he was honestly being nice. "So, Zack. What made you decide to approach the psychopath's daughter this morning?" she teased.

Zack nodded silently and mixed up another drink, similar to his own. What sixteen year old didn't drink? It wasn't enough to make her parents wonder anything, and it was morning so by the time they got home it would be out of her system and off her breath anyway. He looked up at her with a smile as he offered it, taking a drink of his own. "Well, highest room, tallest tower I think. Yeah." He wasn't really comparing, but it fit. Rapunzels parents were evil to her and kept her locked up because they dind't like her boyfriend wasn't it? He wasn't sure, he didn't think he ever actually read it. "Well I'd give you one if you want." He offered casually with a gentle shrug of his shoulders.
He didn't really think of her parents were psychopaths, but he supposed it couldn't be ruled out either. He thought silently for a second and shrugged. "I heard what they said, and I didn't think it was fair that they refused to take you to school just because of your clothes." He paused and took a drink before adding, "Besides, you look pretty to me, I don't know why they're so upset about it. So I thought I'd be nice and offer to get you to school."
